How to Read Easy Guitar Tabs
Music is a wonderful gift that many people enjoy listening to, but not everyone has the skills to produce music on an instrument. Instruments like the violin, the piano, and the saxophone may take months to learn and years to achieve a high skill level. On these instruments and many others, it is very difficult to self-teach but this is not true of the guitar. Many guitarists have taught themselves how to play and many do not even know how to read music. How is this possible? Through using guitar tablature anyone can learn to play songs on the guitar without being able to read music.
When new guitarists take their first look at guitar tabs, they might be overwhelmed by what seems like a very complex series of numbers and symbols. However, it is really quite simple to learn to read easy guitar tabs. Easy guitar tabs are set up in a convenient, visual way that is quite self-explanatory. A tab staff is composed of 6 horizontal lines, each representing a string of the guitar. The bottom line represents the lowest “E” string, the next line up is “A”, and the third from the bottom is “D”. The top three lines represent the strings G, B, and E, in that order.
Easy guitar tabs tell guitarists exactly what combination of strings to use and which frets to press down on. Arranged in vertical columns along the 6 lines of the guitar staff are numbers representing different frets on the guitar. For example, a number 7 printed on the third line from the top means that the guitarist should play a note using the seventh fret on the third, or G string. When multiple numbers are stacked in the same column, the tab is indicating that the guitarist should play all of those notes at the same time, creating a chord. Many times, easy guitar tabs will also print the name of the chord above the staff to help guitarists learn to recognize chords.
While figuring out which notes to play is relatively easy for new guitarists and seasoned musicians alike when confronted with easy guitar tabs, it is not always so straight-forward when the notes should be played. In fact, unless the guitarist has heard the song played before, there is no way to discern the rhythm from simply reading easy guitar tabs. This is the biggest flaw in guitar tablature and it often poses a problem to musicians who are used to reading standard notation. However, with the availability of music on the internet these days it is simple to find a recording of almost any song. Listening to the song a few times may be all it takes for some guitarists to learn the rhythms to pair with the guitar tablature.
Guitar tabs allow any guitarist to learn to play a song regardless of whether or not they are able to read music. For many situations, this is a great benefit, but it also poses a problem – only guitarists can read guitar tabs. Unlike standard notation which allows musicians of all types to read the notes and rhythms, guitar tabs are specifically designed for guitarists. Despite the flaws, guitar tablature is a great innovation and it has made it easier than ever for individuals to teach themselves to play the guitar.
