How to Read Easy Guitar Tabs

The process of learning how to play an instrument can take a great deal of time and all musicians move through this process differently. Many musicians spend the first few years of their careers learning to read standard notation so that they become masters at sight reading. The complex symbols including numbers, lines, and dots of standard notation are overwhelming to many musicians and some simply cannot master the skill of reading music.

Fortunately, guitarists do not have to face these struggles if they do not want to. There are many advantages to a guitarist learning how to read music but if this endeavor is not your cup of tea then there is another option available – guitar tablatures. Guitar tablatures provide a way for guitarists to learn to play a song without having to read standard notation. Easy guitar tabs make it simple for any guitarist to pick up the skill – they provide a visual map of the song and make it easy to see exactly how the song is to be played.

An easy guitar tab is set up in the form of six horizontal lines, each representing one of the six strings on the guitar. The bottom line of the staff represents the lowest E string and the top line represents the high E string. Easy guitar tabs indicate to musicians which notes are to be played by printing a number on the various lines of the staff. Each number represents a fret along the neck of the guitar and the line on which the number is printed shows the guitarist on which string that fret should be used.

For example, if the number 7 is printed on the third line from the top of the staff, then the seventh fret should be used on the third, or G, string. A zero marked on any line of the staff simply indicates that an open string should be played. Easy guitar tabs can also indicate chords by printing several numbers in vertical alignment – each number that is printed within a column represents a note of the chord. While guitar tablatures may look and sound confusing to beginning guitarists, they are actually quite simple to learn. With a little bit of practice and dedication you can quickly graduate from plucking individual notes to reading guitar tabs to play songs.
