3 Tips to Learning Easy Guitar Tabs
One of the more difficult lessons for beginning guitarists is on learning guitar tabs. Tabs, or tablature, are essentially the sheet music guitarists use to learn different songs. They show where the guitarist needs to place his or her fingers, how to strum, etc. There are so many tabs out there, and many of them are unique and complex. However, beginners should stick to the basics first. After mastering several easy guitar tabs, they can attempt some of the harder ones. But what are these easier tabs, and how can one learn to play them well? Here are some good tips:
Tip #1
The first and most obvious tip for picking up the easy guitar tabs is to become familiar with tablature in general. Each line on the tab represents a string on your guitar. The top string is the 1st string. It is also the smallest and the highest-pitched. The bottom string, or 6th string, is the largest string on your guitar, which also has the lowest pitch. Each string also represents a note when played by itself. From the bottom of the tab upward, those notes are EADBGE. Finally, there are symbols for fret numbers and open strings. Get to know those and you have made a good start.
Tip #2
Listen to the songs before you attempt to play them. That way, you know what kind of sound you are trying to get from your guitar. Hopefully you either have an instructor to help you with this part, or you can access helpful audio online, at a music story, or possibly even at the library. If you hear the music before you play it, you have a goal. Goals are especially helpful for beginning guitarists who may feel lost and confused if they are not working towards accomplishing something specific.
Tip #3
Even easy guitar tabs will take some getting used to. So practice them as much as possible. New guitarists get turned off all the time when they skip right past the easy guitar tabs and try the difficult ones. Well, if you do not first practice the simpler material, expect to get poor results from the higher level material. Work your way up to more challenging songs through lots of dedication and plenty of practice. There is no way you will see yourself progress on the guitar without spending consistent quality time practicing what you know.
Never underestimate the power of practice. If you are not willing to put in lots of time practicing, then you will never be that good at the guitar. However, you have heard practice makes perfect. Though not entirely true, you will see yourself improving quickly if you work hard. Know how to read the guitar tablature first. Note where your fingers go, which fret you should be on, and how to play each string. Listen, too. By listening both to yourself and instructors or professionals, you will a good idea of how the music is supposed to sound. Soon you will be the master of easy guitar tabs!
